As part of his tour of various units and departments in Covenant University, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Charles K. Ayo on Friday, March 8, 2013 visited the University’s Centre for Endowment, Research and Development (CUCERD)

Receiving the Vice-Chancellor and his entourage at the CUCERD Conference room, the Director of the Centre, Professor Louis Egwari unfolded the CUCERD committee’s plan to make the centre fulfill its mandate.

Professor Egwari said some sub and ad hoc committees have been set up to reposition and drive the vision of the Centre. Among these committees are the Publication and Grant Sub-Committee, Patent/Product Development Sub-Committee, CUCERD Conference and Exhibition Sub-Committee, Patent Application Ad-hoc Committee, among others.

The CUCERD Director informed the Vice Chancellor on his plan for the Centre this year, which includes the reviving of the Intellectual Property Technology Transfer Office (IPTTO) at CUCERD, reviewing all unique findings and process same for patenting, reviewing its policy on commercialization to make it more attractive to both inventors and investors, and making Covenant University visible in Fairs and Exhibitions both nationally and internationally.

While affirming the Centre’s commitment to being a catalyst in the University’s drive towards becoming a vibrant research and development institution, the Director pointed out the need for adequate funding to enable faculty participate in international conferences that would better the lot of the institution.

Furthermore, he appealed to the Management to provide the Centre with necessary manpower and equipment that would make faculty and students patronize the centre more often.

The CUCERD Director and other members of the University CUCERD committee, however, decried the fact that the CUCERD workshop was grossly underutilized by the University community.

The Registrar, Dr. Ubong Ntia reacting to the manpower need of the Centre said that management was poised to increase the manpower base of the Centre, whenever such requests are made.

On his part, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor AAA. Atayero said equipment would be procured for the Centre and all other units of the University in need of equipment as soon as the ongoing comprehensive audit of all equipment in the University was completed. This, he said, was to forestall duplication, and encourage resource sharing.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Charles K. Ayo appreciated the Director and other members of CUCERD committee for their zest and commitment to upholding the tenets and intent of establishing the centre.

for the release of grants. He explained that the present delay was due to the auditing of previous research grants released. This, he said, was to ensure that probity, transparency and accountability was maintained at all levels of operation of the institution.

The Vice-Chancellor further promised to work with all concerned to ensure the maximization of the IPTTO office in CU. According to him, since Covenant University has been licensed to handle patent related matters in the South Western part of Nigeria, it would be wrong for even the University faculty to go to IPTTO’s Abuja office for what could easily be done within the University.

At the end of the briefing, the Vice-Chancellor and his entourage were led on a guided tour of the CUCERD Workshop, Foundry, and Paw-paw farm. This was the last in the series of strategic visits by the Vice-Chancellor to Directorates and Units of the University for the 2012/2013 academic session.
