NITDA Seeks Collaboration with Covenant on Scholarship Scheme

Acting Head, Human Resources and Administration, NITDA, Mr Eniola Ayodeji, speaking on the purpose of his team’s visit to Covenant University

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has opened discussions with Covenant University on the feasibility of the two organisations forging a partnership for the execution of the agency’s Scholarship Scheme for Nigerian students.

Speaking during a courtesy visit to the Management of the University on Thursday, September 14, 2017, the Head, Human Resource and Administration of NITDA, Mr. Eniola Ayodeji, said that the Director General of the agency Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, had personally expressed preference for Covenant University as a partner in the scholarship scheme based on the institution’s profile as the best private university in Nigeria.

NITDA, according to Mr. Ayodeji, has since 2010 been giving out scholarship awards in two categories– the Masters and Doctorate scholarships. He said that the scholarships are intended for students who wish to have a career in the Information Communication Technology industry, adding that candidates are required to undergo an Aptitude Test, with the successful ones sponsored to study in some of the best universities in the world.

He explained that the scheme suffered a setback in 2016 due to the exchange rate of the US dollar. This had made NITDA to look inwards for institutions that they can partner with and Covenant University, which has an existing Memorandum of Understanding with the agency, came to the fore.

Mr. Ayodeji, who was accompanied on the visit by NITDA’s Head of Special Duties, Dr. A.A. Dahiru, and Scholarship Desk Officer, Mrs. Christo Izi, said that his organization wish to work with Covenant University to foster technological development of the country by supporting young people with ideas in the area of innovation.

Earlier in his welcome remarks, the Registrar, Covenant University, Dr. Olumuyiwa Oludayo, appreciated NITDA for being part of the University’s efforts at bringing its aspirations to reality, stressing that the partnership between the University and the agency would be of mutual benefit.

The Vice-Chancellor, Covenant University, Professor AAA. Atayero, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shalom Chinedu, said that the University is very passionate about the quality of its products and a major area of interest where huge investment has been made is Postgraduate Training. He added that the University has many programmes that are ICT-oriented.

While assuring that the proposed collaboration would be successful, Professor Chinedu said that training is very vital because, “to develop a nation, you need to develop the people”.

Other representatives of Covenant University at the occasion were the Director, Financial Services, Pastor Sunday Abayomi; and Director, Centre for Systems and Information Services, Dr. Emmanuel Adetiba.
