Summary of Profile

Dr (Mrs.) Tayo Ola George holds B.Sc., M.Sc. and PhD degree in Sociology. Tayo is an Associate Professor of Sociology with over 14 years teaching, research and mentoring experience at Covenant University. She currently teaches Sociology courses (Social Inequality, Social Stratification and Mobility, Gender issues in Development and Leadership) at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels. Tayo began her Career in the Nigerian Banking sector between 1998-2005 and rose to the position of Senior Banking Officer at United Bank for Africa PLC, Lagos Nigeria. To date, Tayo has over 42 publications in notable journals, book chapters and conference proceedings in her area of research focus (gender, development studies, women empowerment issues, widowhood & property inheritance, women’s access to land, ICT, health policy, education, religion and conflict management). Tayo has presented research papers in major conferences in Canada, USA, UK, Spain, Italy and several African Countries. Tayo is a recipient of several awards and research grants locally and internationally. She is currently Africa’s Regional Representative at the International Sociological Association (ISA) Spain, Research Committee (RC32) – Gender and Women in Society, Member RC 19: Sociology of Poverty, Social Welfare and Social Policy, African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) Nairobi, Kenya and was team leader of AERC funded collaborative research on Institutions and Service Delivery conducted in 2009 in Lagos, Nigeria. Tayo is a member of the Nigerian Anthropological and Sociological Practitioners Association of Nigeria (NASA), Nigeria Sociological Society (NSS) and Associate Member and Prize Winner, Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPMN). Tayo won the prestigious CIPMN award for the best female student in the professional examinations in 2001. Tayo was a University Scholar at the Department of Sociology at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Nigeria from 1994 to 1996 and won the prize as best graduating student in Sociology for the 1996 set. She has served in several committees in Covenant University and the Proprietor-base, the Living Faith Church at Canaanland. She was the immediate past Head, Department of Sociology at Covenant University Nigeria between 2014 to 2016. She currently serves as the Head, Covenant University Research Cluster on Women Development and Human Security Initiatives CU-WDHSI, Postgraduate Coordinator for the Department of Sociology, Coordinator, Faculty Women’s Advance (FWA) and Chair, Covenant University Community Development Impact Initiative Committee (CU-CDIIC) committed to serving humanity. Tayo was Vice-Chairman, Governing Council of the Faith Academy Secondary School, Canaanland, Ota, Nigeria and Chairman, Quality Assurance and Academic Standard Committee of the school from 2015 to 2019. She served as Treasurer, Kingdom Heritage Model School, Canaanland PTA from 2008 to 2014. Tayo has a penchant for hard work, integrity, and excellent delivery. She is a network member of the Council for Development of Social Research in Africa (CODESRIA) Institute Dakar, Senegal and won CODESRIA’s grant for thesis writing in 2009, International Sociological Association (ISA) Spain travel grant. Several AERC travel grants and sponsorship to attend Centre for the Study of African Economy (CSAE) Conference at Oxford University, London. Tayo is currently a reviewer to notable journals in gender and development studies, SAGE Open Access Journal, Cogent Journal of Humanities and Social Science and Reviews for Covenant Health Research Ethics Committee where she currently serves as Secretary. Tayo serves on the board of African Leadership Development Centre (ALDC) at Covenant University. Tayo was recently appointed as Advisory Judge, 2020 Positive Naija Essay Competition. Her hobbies include reading, writing and swimming. Tayo is very passionate about women development and leadership in society and hopes to see women liberated from poverty, injustice, and inequality through her research efforts. Tayo is a Deaconess with the Living Faith Church Worldwide Canaanland, Ota. She is married and blessed with children.
