Understanding Life Crucial to Character Development -Dr Oyedepo
The Chancellor and Chairman, Board of Regents, Covenant University, Dr. David O. Oyedepo, has urged faculty and staff of the University to renew their commitment to helping students build their character. He considered it vital in the quest to successfully rebuild the nation’s socio-economic and political fabrics.
Dr. Oyedepo, speaking on the topic “Covenant University Core Values: Foundation for the Attainment of Vision 10:2022” on the second day of the Executive Advance Programme for Faculty and Senior Non-Teaching Staff in commencement of the 2018/2019 Academic Session, said, “It is character that gives birth to capacity; the loss of character is equal to the loss of everything”.
He explained that the Core Values of Covenant were geared towards addressing the widespread decay in Nigeria. According to him, “Learning about life is more vital than learning about other things. The plague of Nigeria is rooted in her devotion to learning about everything except life, which is pivotal to character development”.
Dr. Oyedepo noted that Covenant’s Departure Philosophies were tailored to provide a radical change from conventional education system to knowledge based on skill, empowerment, future building, realism, life-enhancing and fact, which constitute the pillars the University’s Core Values were built upon.
He posited that developing good character and subscribing fully to the dictates of the seven Core Values of the University would empower ordinary mortals to operate in unusual dimensions, because God’s grace would be released for extraordinary performance.
The Chancellor identified Covenant’s Core Values arrowhead of Spirituality as an asset and the foundation of inestimable value which, when fully embraced, would guarantee all round profiting. “When the foundation of any venture is in place, the future is secured,” he added.
Furthermore, he averred that Possibility Mentality was key to a world of unlimited possibilities, as “no one ever arrives at a future he cannot see and no one ever arrives at a future he is not prepared for.”
The renowned educationist stated, “The largest room in the world is the room for continuous improvement, and excellence is the product of one’s tireless commitment to improvement. Thus, it becomes imperative for each member of Covenant University, students inclusive, to remain committed to developing relevant skills in pursuit of a given task towards the speedy attainment of Vision 10:2022.”
Dr. Oyedepo told the gathering that irrespective of the feat that one’s capacity could accomplish in the pursuit of any given vision, it would take adherence and commitment to a lifestyle of Integrity to preserve it. Thus, every member of Covenant should essentially maintain intellectual integrity across board. In addition, he emphasised that high-level Discipline was paramount if Vision 10:2022 must be delivered in a grand style.
The Chancellor asserted that no world-changer ran a normal schedule, possessed a normal habit or had a normal lifestyle; hence, one must be ready to be Diligent in assignments and at the same time make the requisite sacrifice towards building and attaining global impact. According to him, “It takes paying a global price to generate a global impact”.
Dr. Oyedepo cautioned the gathering against seeing the vision to be among the top 10 universities in the world by the year 2022 as an ambition, but as a prophetic agenda. An agenda that when pursued with a mind-set of the Core Value of Possibility Mentality, being a product of faith, would empower speedy delivery. “What we don’t receive and believe, we are not empowered to become,” he concluded.
