“Nigeria and the Challenges of Global Politics”

For Nigeria to take its role in the new global economy, the most critical political struggle in the country should be centered on bringing the state back into the public sphere and space where it really belongs. That is, to be a public agency that gives happiness and welfare to Nigerians.

The duo of Dr. Felix Chidozie and Mr. Ilemobola Olanrewaju of the Department of Political Science and International Relations of Covenant University, submitted in their paper titled, “Nigeria and the Challenges of Global Politics”, published in the book, “The State in Contemporary Nigeria, Issues, Perspectives and Challenges.”

In it, they argued that the domestic challenges inherent in the country have narrowed the state-society space and resulted in what they called “the tragedy of low expectation” on the part of the Nigerian people, adding that the tragedy of the performance of the Nigerian state in the global context is rooted in her false start and her forceful integration into the international division of labour, resulting in structural distortion in the country’s political economy. However, as the Nigerian state begins to perform its critical roles, they say, citizens and communities would gradually begin to ascribe due recognition to the state and would eventually dovetail into strong state-society relations.
