A Quality Assurance and Control expert, Mrs. Abimbola Akinfenwa of Fidson Pharmaceuticals, Lagos, has enlightened students of the Department of Biological Sciences, Covenant University, on the need to make the right career decisions early, in order to have a defined area of skill and competence as they advance in their career journeys.

While making her presentation as the Guest Speaker at the first Town and Gown Seminar of the Department for the 2019/2020 Academic Session, Mrs. Akinfenwa, who spoke on the topic ‘Career Path to Becoming a Quality Assurance/Quality Control Expert’, emphasised the need for students with the ambition of becoming professional Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) personnel to first be able to differentiate between the two terminologies.

She identified QA as a set of activities for ensuring quality in the processes by which products were developed, while QC was a set of activities for ensuring quality in the products and materials.

Mrs. Akinfenwa went on to describe the distinguishing factors between the two areas as being that QA is product oriented, verifies methods, is a managerial tool and prevents defects; while QC is product or material oriented, validates methods, is a corrective tool which detects and corrects defects.

While highlighting the prerequisites for becoming a QA or QC professional, she listed a Bachelor of Science degree, a degree in Engineering, a degree in Information Technology as well as additional qualifications and certifications in related fields.

The Head, Department of Biological Sciences, Professor Solomon Oranusi, appreciated the efforts of the University Management in establishing a platform for interaction between the industry and the academia via the Town and Gown Series.

He thanked the Guest Speaker for her willingness to give back, as expressed by her acceptance of the invitation to be a part of the event. He also appreciated the students, faculty and staff for ensuring the success of the programme. Also at the event were Professor Olawale Obembe and other senior officers of the Department.
