Expert Enlightens Covenant Students on Application of Mechanical Engineering Principles

Students of Mechanical Engineering at Covenant have been urged to be proficient in both the theoretical and practical aspects of their studies to emerge as well-rounded graduates, because they could get a good job with an excellent degree or qualification but would not sustain it with the degree or qualification.

The Head, Mechanical/Piping and Pipeline Engineering Department, Global Oceon Engineers Nigeria Limited, Engr. Godwin Irabor, gave the counsel on Thursday, September 6, 2018, while delivering a lecture at the first Town and Gown Seminar of the Department of Mechanical Engineering for the Alpha Semester.

Speaking on the topic, ‘Application of Mechanical Engineering Principles to the Oil and Gas Engineering Design Sector’, the Guest Speaker said mechanical engineering was a branch of engineering that carried out design, construction, installation, operation and maintenances of mechanical equipment or machines. “Mechanical Engineers are typically involved with the design, operation and development of maintenance procedures for Static and Rotating equipment and machines,” he added.

While stating that the oil and gas industry was made up of the Upstream, Midstream and the Downstream Sectors, Engr. Irabor said the typical key roles of mechanical engineering in the oil and gas sector included General Project Engineering activities; development of procedures relating to operations, design and maintenance; ensuring safe, reliable and environmentally responsible operations; making use of industry/company codes and standards to do engineering designs; interfacing with Vendors, Clients and Contractors; and managing the maintenance and repair of existing equipment.

The Guest Speaker said there was also integration of duties for mechanical engineers in the oil and gas sector. He said they comprised supporting the plant equipment both onshore and offshore to ensure that they remained efficient and productive; and working for a range of companies including companies who owned or managed production facilities (known as Operators), Service Companies and Engineering Consultancies. According to him, there was also interaction as part of a larger team, using knowledge, logics, initiative and expertise from past project experience, among others.

Mr. Irabor noted that the Mechanical Engineering courses the students love studying today, would surely be useful to them tomorrow. According to him, in connecting Mechanical Engineering courses to the oil and gas Engineering Design Sector, all engineering designs followed the process of information gathering, processing of information, obtaining results from processed information, and interpreting as well as reporting the output generated.

On areas of specialisation, the Guest Speaker stated that for the oil and gas engineering design sector, a mechanical engineer could specialise in Mechanical Engineer – Static Equipment Design, Mechanical Engineer – Rotating Equipment Design, Mechanical Designer – CAD (2D & 3D), Riser and Hydrodynamics Engineer, Pipeline Engineer (Design and Installation), and Piping Engineer, among others.

He listed two of the Mechanical Engineering Principles applied in oil and gas engineering design sector as Mechanical Design Checks and the Action and Reaction Philosophy. Mechanical Design Checks were usually carried out to determine the integrity of the equipment under different load cases such as Installation (empty), Flooded, Hydrotest, Accidental, Operating cases, etc. On the other hand, the Action and Reaction Philosophy featured Newton's laws of motion of classical mechanics, which said that all forces occurred in pairs such that if one object exerted a force on another object, then the second object exerted an equal and opposite reaction force on the first.

Engr. Irabor, who was accompanied to the Town and Gown event by the General Manager of Global Oceon Engineers Nigeria Limited, Mrs. Ochuwa George, commended Covenant for setting out programmes to close the gap between what was obtainable in the industry and the academic world.

Earlier in his welcome remarks, the Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Engr. (Professor) Sunday Oyedepo, appreciated the Guest Speaker for taking time out of his busy schedule to expose Covenant students to the application of mechanical engineering principles to the oil and gas engineering design sector. He urged the students to pay attention to Engr. Irabor for them to benefit from what he had to say.
