Covenant, Merck Sign MoU on Research and Development
Covenant University and Merck Pharmaceuticals and Life Sciences Limited have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on joint research and development collaboration, with the aim of properly positioning the University for the actualization of its objectives.
Speaking at the event held on Tuesday, January 16, 2018, the Head of Africa, Merck, Mr. Mathias Getrost, expressed his excitement at the opportunity to collaborate with Covenant University and stressed the commitment of Merck to abide by the tenets of the partnership.
Mr. Getrost pointed out that Merck Pharmaceuticals and Life Sciences Limited, provides Healthcare, Life Science and performance materials to organizations across the world, and is very passionate about performance and service delivery.
He stated that Merck currently partners with some Laboratories across Africa in the areas of Malaria, HIV, Diabetes and Cancer research for educational development, including the supply of chemicals and training in different areas of research activities.
The collaboration between Covenant University and Merck centres on joint research and development collaboration, procurement of high quality healthcare products, chemicals, and equipment. The partnership also covers knowledge and technology sharing, joint scientists capacity building training, exchange of educational and research materials, and joint exhibition of products during workshops and conferences.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor AAA. Atayero, in his remarks, welcomed the representatives of Merck and expressed the excitement of Covenant University towards the partnership. He assured Merck of the University’s commitment to the practicality of the MoU.
The Vice-Chancellor pointed out that the partnership could not have come at a better time than now, when the University is focused on its goal of attaining world-class status, a few years from now. He added that the MoU would aid the aspiration together with God’s guidance.
Earlier in his remarks, the Registrar, Dr. Olumuyiwa Oludayo, said the University was glad to partner with Merck Pharmaceuticals and Life Sciences and affirmed its bright prospect.
Also present at the event were the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shalom Chinedu; Dean, College of Science and Technology, Professor Kolawole Ajanaku; Director, Covenant University Centre for Research Innovation and Discovery (CUCRID), Professor Olawole Obembe; and Director, Vice-Chancellor’s Office, Professor David Omole.
Others were Head, Department of Chemistry, Professor Akan Williams; Acting Head, Department of Biological Sciences, Dr. Grace Olaseinde; Acting Head, Department of Biochemistry, Dr. Solomon Rotimi; Professor Louis Egwari; Professor Emeka Iweala and a representative of the Legal Unit, Mrs. Justina Osayande.
