Covenant Faculty Wins NCC Research Fellowship Award

A faculty in the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering, Covenant University, Professor Francis Idachaba, has emerged winner of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) Research Fellowship Award.

An inter-agency panel set up by the NCC had received a total of 96 applications, which were subjected to a rigorous review process, after which only 6 finalists were successful and thus given the award that also came with a grant.

Professor Idachaba, in his reaction to the development, said that he felt elated, excited, and deeply grateful to God for the award as it offered him an opportunity to develop a low-cost GSM telephone system for rural areas and engage in cutting-edge Communications Engineering research.

According to the Professor of Communication Engineering, “This award provides me with an opportunity to undertake research in spectrum monitoring, Cognitive Radio, IoT, and several areas of Communication Engineering. It also provides me with an opportunity to mentor both my graduate and undergraduate students and give them access to Communication Engineering laboratory equipment”.

Professor Idachaba, who is the Director, Academic Planning Unit, Covenant University, said that the award would enable his research cluster setup a Communication Research Lab, which will enable the University to produce graduates able to compete globally and contribute to world-class research in the area of Communication Engineering.

Professor Idachaba’s research interests include 5G Communication Network Architecture, Internet of Things, E-Health, Communication Architecture Design, Wireless Sensor Networks, System Design, and Electronics.

He has patent rights for a number of inventions. The products are Renewable Charge Harvesting Architecture for the Design of an Electric Bus; Low Power Bidirectional Transceiver for GSM Base Station Transceivers; Pipeline Leak Inhibitor Tool for Onshore and Offshore Crude Oil Pipeline networks; and Offshore Pipeline Monitoring Tool.
