Covenant Bags Gold Medals at 2020 World Invention Creativity Olympic
Covenant University staff's creativity and innovativeness have signposted Nigeria once again on the global stage, as they won gold medals at the World Invention Creativity Olympic (WICO) 2020 organized by the Korea University Invention Association in Seoul, South Korea, between August 20 – 22, 2020.
Mrs. Taiwo Owoeye and Mrs. Felicia Akinlabu won gold for Best Presentation and Outstanding Creativity and Innovativeness in the ADPL Seed Extracts in their entry. Simultaneously, the trio of Akindele Ayoola, Oguntosin Victoria, and Ajayi Oluwaseun came tops in their category for Outstanding Creativity and Innovativeness Emergency IoT Tracking System.
President, Organization for Creativity, Innovation and Invention Promotion, Nigeria (OCIIP Nigeria), Mr. Michael Esuong, said the feat was a dream come true for OCIIP Nigeria as it had reinforced their commitment to promoting the works of creativity of Nigerians to the world.
Mr. Esuong stated that the collaboration between Covenant and OCIIP Nigeria was tailored to help reputable international organizations access quality innovations from Nigeria. According to him, the only entries accepted from the whole of the African continent were those two from Covenant University, having been adjudged to meet the global standard for participating in the WICO event.
The Director, Covenant University Centre for Research, Innovation and Discovery (CUCRID), Professor Emeka Iweala, said the ADPL Seed Extracts and Emergency IoT Tracking System were both creative works that the Centre was proud to have funded and supported. He said the result could only be considered a recognition of the University's drive towards research excellence.
Professor Iweala said this outcome from the Centre's participation in its first virtual exhibition had injected a new verve into its operation with a renewed assurance to work towards seeing many other products from the Centre's stable hit the market with possible returns to the University.
In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor AAA. Atayero, represented by the Registrar, Dr. Oluwasegun Omidiora, appreciated God for the exploit made by the University's representatives at the event. He noted that it was not a surprise that it was happening at such a time as this while reiterating the commitment of the University's Management towards the existing partnership between Covenant University and OCIIP Nigeria.
Professor Atayero, who was appointed an honorary ambassador of the 9th/10th World Invention Creativity Olympic (WICO) from 2020 through 2021, said the excellent spirit at work in the personnel at CUCRID had consistently delivered on the mandate handed out to the team there. He urged them to keep doing more extraordinary things from their platform.
A full complement of Covenant University Centre for Research, Innovation and Discovery including Deputy Directors, Principal Information Officer, and award winners witnessed the medals and awards presentation ceremony.
