Chemist Unveils Relevance of Profession in Pharmaceutical Industry
Participants at the Town and Gown seminar series of the Department of Chemistry, Covenant University, Ota, have been told to be prepared for the world of work in any industry, particularly the Pharmaceutical industry.
The Guest Speaker at the event, which took place on Thursday, March 16, 2017, at the University campus, Mr. Babatunde Ajala, enjoined the participants, who were largely the students of the department to see themselves as very relevant in the pharmaceutical industry.
While speaking on the topic, “Exploring the World of Work as a Chemist in a Pharmaceutical Industry,” Ajala, who is the Strategic Marketing Manager, Neimeth International Plc, charged the participants to be bold and see their course of study as very relevant to any industry particularly pharmaceutical industry.
“Nothing in this world that could be done or that would be done without a Chemist. What you should be telling people with boldness is, ‘be calm and trust me, I am a Chemist.’ Because you are relevant wherever you find yourself,” he said.
He added that as graduates of Chemistry, it does not mean that they would end-up in the laboratory or teaching profession but be ready for the transition. “You don’t know when the transition period will start. The idea is to understand that it will, and become prepared for it,” he advised.
The guest speaker listed what he called core and non-core pharmaceutical departments where Chemists are required in the pharmaceutical industry. These, he said, include regulatory and patenting department; production department; formulation department; quality control/assurance; research and development; human resource department; finance and administration; business development as well as sales and marketing.
In his remarks, the Head, Department of Chemistry, Dr. Akan Williams, noted that the department would work out collaboration with Neimeth International Plc on drug design and production, even as he hinted that some faculty in the department are involved in drug design under the Bio-informatics Research Cluster of the University.
